Mark Guantero shines as Philippians take control early and ease to victory over Greyhounds

SINGAPORE – Philippians came up with a solid start and eased to victory over Greyhounds, 74-68, in Gilas Basketball 2017 Republika Cup Playoffs at Yusof Ishak Secondary School sponsored by Lutong Pinoy.

Philippians overpowered Greyhounds in the first quarter, 22-13 and finished the first half with 11 point lead. Greyhound made their move in the third period bringing the down the lead to 5 points entering the final frame but Philippians is steady down the stretch answering every run made by Greyhounds and sinking important free throws to seal this victory.

Mark Gunatero came up with a team-high 16 points on 7 of 15 shooting and grabbed 3 rebounds in 25 minutes of action.

Nolte Bombay came off the bench to deliver 14 markers and 4 boards while Christopher Capiral posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for Philippians, who advance to the next round and will face 6Triple0 for the first seat in the finals.

Philippians was dominant in the shaded area scoring 48 points inside the paint while Greyhounds was held to 38 points. Their bench also showed up in this game as they outscored Greyhounds bench, 42-29.

Ryan Balagtas led Greyhounds with a game-high 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting and pulled down 8 boards.

Marl Haresco added 12 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists while JC Tengco chipped-in 11 markers, 4 assists and 2 steals for Greyhounds, who move to the loser’s bracket and will face Tropang Pards in a do-or-die game.
